Transport of human remains
TRANSPORTATION OF HUMAN REMAINS TO SERBIA
To transfer human remains from abroad to the Republic of Serbia, it is necessary to obtain an official "Transfer Permit" (Sprovodnica) issued by the competent authority of the Republic of Serbia.
The application for the transfer permit is submitted at the relevant Serbian Embassy or Consulate.
Required Original Documents for Issuance of the Transfer Permit:
-
Passport of the deceased person.
-
A written request from the family or the funeral service authorized to carry out the transport of the remains. This request must include: the location of burial in Serbia and the route of transport (including transit countries, if any).
-
Death certificate issued by the competent foreign authority.
-
Medical report stating the cause of death.
-
Foreign transfer permit (e.g., "Leichenpass" in Germany or Austria) issued by the competent authority of the country where death occurred.
-
Confirmation of the burial plot in Serbia (only required if the deceased was a foreign citizen).
-
If the deceased died of plague or smallpox, the Serbian Ministry of Health must grant additional approval before the transfer permit is issued. The Embassy/Consulate will request this on your behalf.
If the deceased is to be buried in another country, but the remains will transit through Serbia, a transit permit (transit transfer permit) must be obtained. Required documents for transit permit are all the documents listed above and a transfer permit issued by the country of final burial.
To transfer an urn with ashes to Serbia, a transfer permit is also required. In addition to all of the above documents, Certificate of cremation must be submitted.
