MILITARY SERVICE OBLIGATIONS FOR SERBIAN CITIZENS RESIDING ABROAD

Serbian citizens residing within the consular jurisdiction of the Embassy are subject to the obligation of registration in the military records. Once registered, the individual is considered to have regulated their military obligation.

Who must register:

  • Persons who permanently reside abroad, in the calendar year in which they turn 18 years of age, as well as older individuals who, for any reason, have not yet been registered.

  • Persons who have traveled abroad for a stay longer than one year. Such persons must report to the nearest Serbian Embassy or Consulate within 30 days of crossing the border.

Required documents for military registration:

  • Completed Military Registration Form (PDF)

  • Copy of a valid Serbian passport

  • Proof of residence abroad (e.g., a valid local ID or driver’s license with address)

  • Proof of previous residence in Serbia

  • Consular fee of 4 EUR, payable in cash

For citizens who have not completed military service:

The Serbian Ministry of Defense – Local Administration Center will, ex officio, issue a decision transferring such citizens into the military reserve when they turn 30 years old.

However, if a citizen under the age of 27 wishes to be transferred to the reserve earlier, they may submit a request, provided that they meet the requirements under Articles 44 and 66, paragraph 4 of the Law on Labor, Military and Material Obligations.

Dual citizenship holders:

If a citizen of Serbia also holds citizenship of another country, they must submit the following additional documents:

  • Completed Military Registration Form (PDF)

  • Copy of Serbian passport

  • Certified copy of proof of foreign citizenship, translated into Serbian by a certified translator

  • Certified copy of a foreign ID with address, translated into Serbian

  • Proof of employment, and/or other documentation proving that the person's economic and family life center is abroad (e.g. proof of mortgage, property ownership, etc.), translated into Serbian

  • Consular fee of 4 EUR, payable in cash

Military service completed abroad:

If a dual citizen has already completed mandatory military service in the country of their second citizenship, they may apply for transfer to the reserve status in the Serbian Armed Forces.
